On my first full day of my Christmas vacation in Ontario, my sister took me to The Stockyards for lunch. I tried The Stockyards' fried chicken and ribs the previous Christmas holiday for take-out, and with my sister having talked about the small joint's brunches favourably several times, I had to try it for myself as well.

A Golden Court Dinner
A dinner with the maternal grandparents was in order, especially since I for one had not seen them since my last Christmas break. Though my family and I have noticed the existence of Golden Court Abalone Restaurant several times, only my parents and sister tried it last year due to a banquet event being held there. Having enjoyed the cuisine there, they thought it was a good place to try for just a more casual dinner. The Chinese cuisine offered at this restaurant, along with the price tag, was definitely on the higher end, with quite a few dishes on the menus offering various Chinese delicacies like shark's fin, conpoy and swallow's nest. Even with some of the simpler dishes, greater attention was given to presentation compared to most other Chinese restaurants.

Toronto Dishcrawl to End 2011

Knowing that she would still be on holidays from work, before my holidays my sister suggested doing a dishcrawl throughout central Toronto. For those not familiar with what a dishcrawl is, you may have heard of a pub crawl, where people hop from one drinking establishment to another to try a feature/unique drink from each establishment. So, a dishcrawl is where people hop from one eatery to another to try a feature/unique food dish from each establishment. Though she had a quite a few places to choose, we originally settled to try five places and eventually only tried four as, in spite of what our tastebuds would tell us, our stomachs could only take so much.

A Snowy Amble to Allium
(Special thanks to my sister at boneats.ca for allowing me to use her photos on this post. Though I did bring a camera to dinner, I was unable to take decent pictures with it under low lighting conditions.)
Though my sister and I were planning to take our parents to a restaurant in Toronto for their anniversary dinner, my parents still wanted to dine out on their actual anniversary date, so, at the suggestion of a fellow Ottawa foodie, we went to Allium Restaurant for dinner. Located in the Hintonburg neighbourhood, and owned by chef Arup Jana, Allium featured Canadian cuisine in a short menu. One thing I found amusing about the restaurant was that its menu featured a surprise appetizer and a surprise main course, but none of the staff revealed what those dishes were, not even hints. Understandably, the menu cautioned persons with dislikes or allergies to not choose the surprise dishes.

Of Pigeons and Winter Melon Soup
Another dinner with the Vancouver relatives was in order, but this time one of my uncles realized dinner should be had at another place partly for variety and partly to allow us out-of-towners to try something different. For that, it was decided that dinner should be at Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant on Vancouver's Main St. Though this restaurant does specialize in dishes made with fresh, live seafood, it also specializes in Roast Squab, or Roast Pigeon. I'd first discovered this dish when I travelled to Hong Kong at the age of 10. A restaurant just north of Sha Tin was famous for its Roast Squab, though at that age I was perhaps more enticed by the carp-filled ponds in the courtyard.

Winter, Season for Stews
Though stews can be enjoyed at any time, I personally enjoy them more during winters. Stews easily can bring warmth to one's body thanks to the piping hot meat, vegetables and thick broth as well as the hearty nature of these dishes. Stews can also bring warmth to one's home as they simmer on a stove for a length of time. Stews can take some time before they're ready to eat, especially if you use more ingredients, but they are comfort food and worth the time spent in making them. Also, for a bachelor like me, making one batch of stew guarantees at least one or two more dinners later in the week. With windchill hitting the -40's on Tuesday and with limited time to make dinner the next few days, it was a good time to make some stew.

Recalling Christmas Dinner 2010
My sister has finally had the time to post an entry about our Christmas dinner. I must say the goose was delicious... I can't be blamed for choosing something she'd never cooked before, huh? :o)

Where There's Smoke... There's Meat
KFC and Chicken Chef, eat your hearts out. I just discovered some even more delicious fried chicken.
After arriving in Toronto with my sister late Sunday afternoon from a busy post-Christmas drive from Ottawa, neither of us were in the mood for cooking and we had virtually nothing in the fridge, so she and I agreed to do some takeout. Now, Swiss Chalet was an option (and she knows I've a serious weakness for the Chalet sauce), but when she also suggested The Stockyards, I couldn't resist trying this unique local haunt. Thank goodness my curiosity was well rewarded.
